Robert Matthews' work explores perception, memory and the ambiguities of everyday observation. Working in monochrome and colour, his photographs examine the relationship between people, architecture and light, and the layered nature of seeing. His photographic practice has developed alongside a lifelong career as a professional musician and music educator, in which he has long been known as Bob Matthews.
In 2026, Matthews published five artist photobooks—Persistence of Vision, Afterimages, Spectral Shift, Echoes of Seeing and Uncertain Light—which together form the five-volume work Light Misremembers. Drawing on photographs made over more than fifty years, the books explore five distinct but related photographic languages.
His photographs have been exhibited internationally, including COLLECTIVE 2025 at the Perth Centre for Photography (Australia), UNSCRIPTED MOMENTS at the Street Photo Festival, Athens School of Fine Arts (Greece), MINIMALISM at Carlotta Gallery (United Kingdom), and SURREAL at the Glasgow Gallery of Photography (United Kingdom). His work has also been featured in FRAMES Magazine.
